Growing up, summer meant
vacations, and vacations meant quality family time, what my mother,
Victoria
V. Argen, calls, "creating memories." According to Luxury
Experience
Company President, Edward F. Nesta,
"people travel for emotion, passion, and knowledge." Looking to combine
these
two philosophies, my teen nephew, Steven M. Argen, and I flew
to Montréal, Canada for a
family vacation where he had the
opportunity to learn French as well as experience the many attractions
and
adventures of this enchanted city.
Looking for a nearby yet
exciting long-weekend getaway, we selected Montréal as our destination. Founded
in 1642 and established in 1832, Montréal is the second largest Canadian city
and is less than a 60-minute flight from New York.
The city is a delightful
mélange of the old and the new, where cobblestone streets of Vieux- Montréal
(Old Montréal) are equally at home as the modern skyscrapers of downtown. It is
a city of gracious charm and culture that is waiting to embrace you in its
arms. Although English is widely spoken, French is the official language, which
allowed Steven to learn and practice speaking French.
In July 2010, we flew Air Canada
from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York to the Montréal-Pierre Elliott
Trudeau International Airport (YUL). The service was professional and
courteous and the flight time was a mere 58 minutes, which was just enough time
for the flight attendants to bring us a drink and a snack before landing.
Steven Entering Allanté Limousine
After passing through
Customs, we traveled in luxurious style with Allanté
Limousine Service in a sleek black 6-passenger limousine as our
professional and courteous driver Jean-François whisked us the short distance
of 16 miles (25 km) from the airport to our downtown hotel. I relaxed for the
ride while Steven had fun testing all of the controls.

There is much for families to
do and see in Montréal that will appeal to all age groups, amusement parks,
attractions, historic sights, museums, culture, shopping, and adventures. I
enjoyed sharing some of my favorite spots with Steven beginning with a ride to
the top of Mount Royal where we had a
spectacular view of the city, as well as discovering new sights, so that Steven
and I could create our own special memories of our trip.

Debra and Steven Viewing Montreal from Mount Royal
Adventures
Since Steven and I enjoy a
bit of excitement in our lives, we got wet and wild jet boating with Saute Moutons Lachine Rapids Jet
Boat Tours on a one-hour ride on the Lachine Rapids on the Saint-Lawrence River.

Saute Moutons Lachine Rapids Jet Boat Tours
The name Saute Moutons
translates from French to English as "saute" to jump, and "moutons" as sheep,
which the Québeçois, (people of the province of Québec) call the white caps of the
rapids. This thrilling adventure was part sightseeing tour that began at the
historic Clock Tower Pier and part white water rapids tour that felt
like riding a bucking bronco at the rodeo as we hung on tight to the rail as
our jet boat jumped the rapids.

Fashionably Ready for Jumping the Rapids
Part of the fun was the
wearing the "fashionable" safety clothing provided by Saute Moutons, which kept
us mostly dry when the waves crashed over the jet boat as we made our way into
the rapids. Soaked but happy with our adrenaline running high, we disembarked
with the desire to do it again!

Jumping the Rapids
Saute Moutons Lachine Rapids Jet Boat Tours operate from June through September from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Departures are from the Jacques
Cartier Pier in the Old Port of Montréal. 2010 Pricing: Adults: $65.00, Youth
(13 to 18): $55.00, and Children (6 to 12) $45.00. Check the website for

This trip could be called the
many modes of Montréal transportation as we rode airplanes, trains, limos,
boats, underground trains, amusement park rides, and even a quadricycle with Quadricycle
International.
We followed our morning water
adventure with a fun land adventure experiencing the Quays of the Old Port of
Montréal on a quadricycle, which was a covered four-wheeler bike with manual
steering and multi-foot propulsion. Steven took over the steering as we pedaled
along the quay stopping to admire the sights along the way.
Quadricycle International operates from April until May 28 on Saturday, Sunday,
and legal holidays from 11:00 am

Evening Entertainment

Cirque Éloize - iD
We spent a thrill-filled
evening under the large tent with Cirque Éloize, which has been a leader in contemporary
circus arts since 1993. We both love the circus, and the production of
iD by Director Jeannot Painchaud (July 8 - 25, 2010), provided us
with an exciting evening where 14 artists performed 10 circus disciplines
including juggling, aerial acts, contortionism, trampowall, combined with
theatre, action, urban breakdance, hip-hop, and music, as these daredevils
catapulted their way into our hearts.

We experienced a bit of
history and a bit of fantasy with The Old Montréal Ghost on a

"ghoulish" stories with us.

The Old Montréal Ghost Tour

La Ronde Amusement Park
What would summer be for a
teen without a trip to an amusement park? We visited La
Ronde, part of Six Flags, which is Eastern Canada's largest
amusement park, located on Sainte-Hélène Island in the Parc Jean-Drapeau, a short
distance from downtown and easily accessible by subway, as cars are not allowed
on the island.

La Ronde Roller Coaster
Built in 1967, La Ronde
offers more than 40 rides and attractions including a beast of a roller coaster
called "Goliath" that is billed as "one of North America's highest and fastest
roller coasters." This ride lives up to its name and is definitely not for the
faint of heart.

La Ronde Wild Ride
Not to fear, there are rides
appropriate for all ages, as well as games, shows, and food-courts. Visit the

Churches, Museums,
Attractions, and Culture
We visited the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours,
also called the Sailors Church, built in 1771, the oldest stone chapel
in Old Montréal, that is easily distinguished by the large statue of the Virgin
Mary on the roof that faces the harbor.

Chapelle
Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours
The interior features a
hand-painted ceiling and many carved replica ships hanging from the vault of
the ceiling that were gifts from sailors asking for protection during voyages.
Interesting to note, is the modern container ship located in the front of the
chapel as well as the older ships, as sailors continue this tradition.

Carved Replica Ship
Also of note are the stained
glass windows depicting the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary by D. Adolphe
Beaulieu (1910), metal heart votive offerings, and the tomb of Saint Marguerite
Bourgeoys, founder of Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours.

Musée Marguerite Bourgeoys
There is also an interesting
museum (Musée Marguerite Bourgeoys) on the premises dedicated to the
founder, Marguerite Bourgeoys. Admission is charged. Please visit the website for details.

the top of the Montréal Tower, the highest inclined tower in
the world with an impressive height of 575 feet (175 meters) with a 45-degree
angle. To provide a point of comparison, the angle of the Tower of Pisa is only 5 degrees. After a 2-minute
ride to the Observatory at the top of the tower, we were rewarded with
spectacular 360-degree views of Montréal, the Olympic Village, and the Laurentian Mountains.

highlights of the collection of 123 works consisting of 72 paintings, 50 works
on paper, and a sculpture by Paul-Emile Borduas dating from the early 1920s
until his death in Paris in 1960. We had the good fortune to

Shopping
Down the street from Chapelle
Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours in Old Montréal is the Marché Bonsecours, built in
the Classical Revival style circa 1847, which was the former site of city hall
until 1878, and is designated as one of Canada's heritage sites. We enjoyed
browsing through the many shops that featured high-quality Québec artisan
crafts.

We also enjoyed tasting and
purchasing the many artisanal maple products from the vendors located in front
of the Marché Bonsecours.
The Marché Bonsecours

purchased more maple products once Steven discovered the discovered the
delicious hard maple syrup candies, and also made time for some quality bench
time to relax and enjoy dishes of maple syrup sweetened ice cream.

Stained Glass Art in Underground
We experienced downtown
shopping on Rue Sainte-Catherine the longest shopping street in North
America, and when a torrential afternoon rainstorm hit, we simply laughed and
headed indoors to continue shopping in Montréal's all-weather underground,
which covers over 20 miles (33 kms) with excellent shopping throughout.
Where to Dine
The Montréal culinary scene
is richly diverse with family-friendly restaurants that have menus that will
appeal to even the finickiest of eaters.
We had a very tasty lunch at Boccacino's Restaurant-Bar
where the ambience was comfortable and inviting with wood tables flanked
with wood and black leather chairs, wood and marble floor, and brick walls.

Boccacino's Restaurant-Bar
Boccacino's Restaurant-Bar
features interesting appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, grilled
items, and specialty main courses. Steven enjoyed a healthy but hearty Manzanillo
sandwich made with grilled chicken, melted Swiss cheese, sautéed mixed peppers,
avocados, spicy mayonnaise, lettuce and tomatoes served on grilled baguette
bread accompanied by a mountain of crispy french fries.
I had a lovely light lunch of
a salad made with grilled shrimp, mixed field greens, cherry tomatoes, sliced
red peppers, sliced strawberries, raspberries, and sliced almonds, with a poppy

We also had a delicious lunch
at Jardin
Nelson located in the heart of Old Montréal while listening to a jazz
duo. The open-air courtyard restaurant has the feel of New Orleans with its stone and steel girder
walls decorated with a plethora of beautiful hanging flower baskets. Large
canvas umbrellas and retractable awnings provided shelter from sun and rain yet
allow a glimpse of the sky. Square tables flanked French-style slatted folding
chairs on the stone floor.

Jardin Nelson
Jardin Nelson features a
selection of large filled crêpes, salads, pasta, pizza, and main courses.
Steven had a pork filet crêpe made with sweet batter, and filled with sliced
pork filet, fresh tomato, red onion, black Kalamata olives, cheddar,
mozzarella, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce accompanied by a salad made with
julienne zucchini, cabbage, and dried cranberries.
I had a Newburg crêpe made
with sweet batter and filled with Newburg sauce, lobster, scampies, shrimps,
scallops, mozzarella, and cheddar cheese, also accompanied with the salad.

Live Jazz at Jardin Nelson
Jardin Nelson features live jazz music from noon until late evening and is open from
mid-April until the end of April from Thursday through Sunday with service from

We had dinner at Pizzedelic, a cozy and intimate
restaurant located in Old Montréal where the ambience features exposed brick
walls graced with large framed black and white photographs, and the culinary
focus is of course, pizza with thin and flaky crusts. They also have a nice
selection of pastas, salads, and main courses.

Prosciutto and Rocket Pizza
Pizzas are square and come in
two sizes, small and large, and as a point of reference, the small size filled
a large plate. Steven had a tempting rocket pizza made with prosciutto,
arugula, balsamic vinaigrette, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese.

California Shrimp Pizza

comfortable and the focus is on smoked meat, and large deli-type gourmet
sandwiches. They also have a nice selection of salads, seafood, steaks and

Steven continued his healthy
eating with a gorgeous teriyaki beef salad made with grilled peppered strip
loin with teriyaki sauce served on a bed of mixed field greens, with baby corn,
bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, and shredded carrots tossed in sesame oil
vinaigrette, and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

After a fabulous long
weekend, we traveled back to the airport in style once again with Allanté
Limousine Service. After checking-in at the airport and passing through
Customs, we boarded the Air Canada flight en-route for LaGuardia
Airport (LGA) in New York
with our luggage filled with souvenirs of our trip, and our hearts filled with
wonderful family vacation memories to last a lifetime.
Steven M. Argen's Comments on the Trip: "I had the coolest trip with my aunt to Montréal. We
did so much, jet boating, which was a blast, we went through a huge labyrinth,
we toured the city, and we went to a science museum with lots of great
exhibits.

Steven Sampling Québec Maple Syrup Products
The food was also amazing,
mile-high salads, meat pizzas, and pork-filled crêpes. There were also so many
delicious maple products, which I enjoyed sampling as many as I could. Montréal
was a great place to visit, there were fun things for everyone, whether you are
a kid or an adult, and I hope to return again!"
